SCULPTURE
Glass and Felt
My sculptural works are created with the same ideas as the rest of my work. Ideas surrounding transformation, nature, opposite forces combining to create works that are based on ideas from the cabinet of curiosities, asking the questions of origin. Is it animal or plant? Is it a natural wonder or a mythical creation? Is it evolving or devolving? Dying or being born?
The material qualities of glass and felt are as opposite in my mind as possible. Glass is created with such speed, with a very high skill level, and can seem sometimes 'other-worldly'.
Felt is made slowly , is very forgiving, and has a very approachable and 'human' quality. They can perhaps transfer some of there insistent qualities onto one another.
My work represents spaces. Spaces inbetween objects- how they connect or do not. It represents nurturing and some kind of abandoned place like a cocoon or womb or place something has changed or grown or transformed.
It’s about nature and it’s fragility and it’s ever present contradiction of flexibility and seeming immovability. I’m trying to call attention to- to be present to a thing that is challenging. It’s beautiful and also repellent. It’s about becoming comfortable with looking at discomforting things and not loosing our compassion and humanity and also a bit about being humble.
My work is minimalist yet romantic so it’s connected to some feminine mythologies, and ends up looking slightly quirky and disturbing, it calls attention to whispers spoken into cracks and hoped for release
